Hey Gobbettes,
Heys Liam's first annual TIP OF THE MONTH!
;D
Today's lesson:
How to create a custom avatar. (The picture you see when you post)
History and importance of the avatar: (Skip to summary for quick read )
The term "avatar" derives from the Sanskrit word Avatāra, meaning "descent" and usually implying a deliberate descent into mortal realms for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hindu texts, in reference to incarnations of Vishnu the Preserver, whom many Hindus worship as God. The Dasavatara are ten particular "great" incarnations of Vishnu. The "Golden Avatar" popularly known as Gouranga is said to be the most recent descent.
But for are purposes an avatar (sometimes AV, av, or avvie) is an icon or representation of a user. The term is used on MUDs, in computer role-playing games, and shared non-gaming universes such as Active Worlds, Entropia Universe, There, Second Life, and The Palace.
The term has also been applied to online virtual communities, and Internet forums in particular, as a picture that a member has elected to display alongside his or her contributions in order to represent themselves. Avatars have also become popular in instant messaging, and are beginning to be seen in mobile phone communications.

Summary: Your avatar is important and should represent who you are and should be unique to your community. (In this case the community being the GOB forums.)
How to create your custom avatar:
0. Find some pimpin' music. This may take a while depending how much compu-smarts you have and besides, you want to have a good time while doing it ;D
1. Find the picture* (image) you want to represent you. One good way to do this that I do myself is go onto www.google.ca and search a tv show, movie, or feeling I want to represent myself with and then click on the pictures option. After that the great decision making come. ;D *Don't worry it can be any size or shape.
2. Once you found the image you want you are done the hard part! Congratulations!
But now we got to put you image into the battlefield. To do this you must first save the image you want onto your computer. Do this by right-clicking the image and selecting save-as. Once you've done that you have to select a location, I recommend your desktop since you will only have the image your computer temporarily. As well, be sure to name it something you will remember like "temp" or if its a picture of a dog, call it dog .
3. OK! We are almost there. Bear with me. Rarr! Bear joke. Once we have your image we have to find somewhere to host it. I recommend www.photobucket.com since it is very user friendly. So be sure to sign-up for an account and once inside it is pretty self explanatory. Just click upload and choose the image ("temp" or "dog" or whatever it is.) Once done that we come to our final and most rewarding stage.
4. Final Battle This is where we have to actually upload it to the forum. So to start things off be sure to log into your account. Once you've done that access your profile. You can do that by clicking the profile button on the toolbar below the title. Then once you see the page there should be two options beside Member's Bio: 1.Modify Profile 2.Bookmarks. Click on Modify Profile.
Then, under Personal Information there is 4 things you have to modify.
1. Change your avatar to "None"
2. Enter the URL* of your image into "Avatar URL"
3. Change Avatar Width to "100**"
4. Change Avatar Height to "100**"
*You can get your image URL from photobucket. There sshould be the link under your image.
**You may change this depending on the shape of the image (usually 100*100 works quite well for most avatars.)
Then Click on modify Profile and *BOOM*! Your ready to share the new you.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Not to hard eh? Sorry for the long post but I think I rather be thorough just its friendly for everyone to read. But if you have a good sense of computers you can just read the blue parts and figure it out.
Otherwise, Until next time.
Cheers,
Liam
